From an email... (mjg)
Sorry I haven't responded to your message earlier.
I have not attended many meetings, but the ones I have gone to have been worth while.
Personally I have seen a change in the last few years in the amount of time people are willing to spend outside of work hours on things related to work. (myself included). I'm not sure what other people's thoughts are on meeting during business hours, but I know that I would be much more likely to attend and I know a few others at Principal feel the same way. As a manager, I am more than willing to let people go to these events during working hours.
I think the things you are suggesting to get involved with other groups really make sense.
As far as the purely social activities, I think you will see the same thing that we are seeing at Principal. People are really unwilling to give up their personal/family time to go to work related social activities. It just seems that people are too busy and this time is very valuable. I think you really need to limit the number of events, or people just start to ignore them.
Hope this helps.
