NetWare News- Excellent Resources!
The NetWare Product Management Team is back from their whirlwind tour to preview the NetWare 6 Total Cost of Ownership research completed by Gartner. Here are some resources that we know everyone who uses/recommends/fights the good fight will benefit from:

Technical Tips

NEW KLEZ VARIANT CAN DO SOME DAMAGE | News: SearchSecurity
The Klez-I worm carries a boatload of potential problems, not the least of which is the Elkern virus, a piece of malicious code that likes to overwrite executables. Klez-I spreads via its own e-mail engine with multiple subject lines and file names for the infected attachment. Also, Outlook users beware -- Klez-I can execute through the preview pane. http://www.searchsecurity.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci818032,00.html

Experiencing Database Corruptions? Especially With Older Applications?
Here are some Client settings you can change that might help... One possible solution is to go to the data directory and flag the files as "shared". If that doesn't help, try this: go to Novell Client Properties - Advanced Settings - Performance Cache, then changing the following settings:
Cache Writes to OFF
Close Behind Ticks to 0
Delay Writes to OFF
Opportunistic Locking to OFF
True Commit to ON

NetWare 6 Licensing
In case you haven't heard, the licensing model in NetWare 6 changed to a user-based model, which means every user must now have their own unique object and license. If you want more specific information, check out the Brainshare 2002 presentation IO 204 at http://www.novellbrainshare.com/portal/eventguide/sessions.jsp. How does it affect you???

NetWare 6 Hardware Requirements
In my years as a Novell Systems Engineer, one of the most questions I get when a new product hits the street is, "what kind of hardware requirements are there?" Well to help all of you that have that same question, here are the general details:

Minimum System Requirements

Recommended System Requirements
For optimal performance, NetWare 6 has the following recommended system requirements: **NOTE: To determine the optimal size of a boot partition, add the amount of server memory to the minimum amount of the available disk space. The minimum amount of available space is 200 MB, so a server with 1024 MB RAM has an optimal boot partition of 1224 MB (1024 MB + 200 MB = 1224 MB). This size will allow you to do a core dump to the disk drive if required.

Also, check out the Compaq ActiveAnswers Configurator... go thru and select your options- one of OSes is NetWare 6.. http://activeanswers.compaq.com/aaconfiguratorcode/configurationUi.asp?HTMLFilename=Mainselections&UiLocalization=UnitedStates&DisplayCountry=United%20States Even if you don't use Compaq hardware, it will give you some good specifications..

Call-In Novell Tech Support
If you need Novell Tech Support, how do you get it? One method is to call your local Novell authorized partner, either on a per-call basis or as part of a support package. Occasionally you might need to call Novell directly. These calls can be expensive, and not very timely. If you do not have a support contract with Novell, response times (through our outsourced vendor) can range from many hours to many days. For some of you this might be acceptable, for many of you it's not... If you are a CNE, you can get a special price for call. CNEs still get a ˝ price incident. However that incident is only electronic. In the past we sold you ˝ price electronic incidents, but delivered over the phone, because we did not have a great electronic support system in place. Now we do. If that's not acceptable, we have decided to allow you to come directly to Novell to buy one support incident via CCard. We did not allow this in the past, and this is the only group that has that kind of access. The cost for that incident is $450. Many times the cost of an incident pales compares to the timeliness needed to resolve the issue. We have Premium Support contracts starting for as little as $5500 list price, which has a targeted response time of 4 hours. Most calls are answered well under that 4 hour target. Contact your local Novell reseller, Steve, or me, for more information...

NBM 3.7 90-day Evaluation
Check out the downloads web site to get yours!!! By the way, the English-only CD of NBM 3.7 that shipped does have a trial license built in to the install. However, that license will have already expired... Download the one on the NBM pages for 90 days of eval from install date...

Another NBM 3.7 Item
The English-only CD that shipped requires a patch (that is already posted) to ensure that by default all traffic is blocked to and from the public interface(s) if DS is unavailable. This update will already be included on the multilingual release coming next month.

Not to be Left Out...
NBM 3.7 includes the SurfControl Content Database. That is seven core categories with roughly the same number of URL's as the old CyberPatrol. Unless you register with SurfControl to eval the full package, you get no updates to what comes on the CD.

When you go to SurfControl you can either purchase a full product or eval for 45 days free. You will then get the other 23 categories, daily updates, and the monitoring/reporting piece.

Keep your Internet Explorer bookmarks the Same on each computer!
To keep your Internet Explorer Favorites the same on each computer, do the following:

  1. Download and install TweakUI. This program is needed to change the location of your Favorites. This program can be downloaded from http://download cnet.com. Choose the freeware version.
  2. Once it is downloaded, run the tweakui.exe to extract the files. Make note of the location that the files are extracted to.
  3. Go to the folder you extracted the TweakUI files to and right-click on tweakui.inf and choose Install
  4. Now go to the Control Panel | TweakUI
  5. Click on the My Computer tab
  6. Go to the special folders drop down box and choose Favorites.
  7. Take note of the current location of Favorites and go there in Windows Explorer and copy that Favorites directory into your iFolder
  8. Now change the location of Favorites in TweakUI to the Favorites directory in your iFolder.
That's it, your bookmarks are now synchronized.

Timesync Issue After Daylight Savings Time Change
Some NetWare 6 customers have applied Support Pack 1 to NetWare 6, where upon every re-boot since the time change, the server time will advance 1 hour exactly. The problem has been located in SERVER.EXE and will be in the next support pack release (NW6SP2).

There is also currently a workaround, and a solution for this workaround will be available soon on the Knowledgebase for customers (NOVL77268). The workaround is to move the "SET TIME ZONE = " parameter at the beginning of the AUTOEXEC.NCF to underneath the START and END set statements for Daylight Savings Time.

This problem will only affect your tree if your time source server(s) is NetWare 6. We have not seen the same issue with NetWare 5.x.

Speaking of Timesync...
One of our back-line engineers has posted a TID (April 15, 2002) on what should be standard procedure now when setting up Timesync. As most of you know there have been several timesync.nlm's over the year. The newer Timesync.nlm's seem to have helped most of the issues if you follow this new TID.

In summary, even on default installations using Single/Secondary time servers, go to configured time sources and turn off Directory Tree Mode (uses SAP). Make the settings in Monitor > Server Parameters > Time. This is the best way to make sure the settings are used. Although timesync.cfg can be used in large scale roll-outs, using Monitor is preferred.

Also, to get an outside time source, we are now using dynamic port :1024 and for server to server it is still :123. So, customers need to be aware if they are using Atomic clocks and after updating to the newer Timesync, it stops communicating, they may need to change their firewall to reflect this.

Here is the link to the TID: http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10070057.htm

MS Win XP network leakage (from the Novell ListServ)
I sent this to local managers this afternoon. Two more short messages follow it.
     Joe D.
--------------
Theregister.co.uk today reported another MS "feature to make our computing experience better". The Search option built into Windows XP goes out over the net to sa.windows.com, 207.46.226.40, to report your query and to forcibly and without notification/permission load several files into your Windows directory. This happens even if we are examining only a local directory.

I checked my machines and the report is true. The files go into dir \srchasst\mui\0409. If you examine them see a web invokation to the above site by name.

I edited the infected files and removed the web stuff. Alas, the behavior does not change. Only this time the IP number is used rather than the name. New versions are downloaded every time Search is invoked.

If it were not much bother I would recommend that we block all access to and from 207.46.226.40. I can't find a way of defeating the exchanges within Windows XP/PRO itself.

Until MS fixes this or we block the leakage I suggest we quietly forget about the Search button in Windows XP.      Joe D.

LICENSING: COUNTDOWN TO JULY 31 from- News: SearchWin2000
Microsoft has made some drastic changes to its volume licensing programs during the last year. Alvin Park, a Gartner senior research analyst, said now is the time to make your move -- don't wait until the last minute. He talked with SearchWin2000 about what your choices are if you procrastinate, how the new model pricing may differ from the old one and why you may be paying too much to license your software. http://www.searchwin2000.com/qna/0,289202,sid1_gci816821,00.html

Microsoft's New Licensing Program Continues to Take Beating
It's been a year since problems related to enterprise licensing of Microsoft products first came to light and licensing terms still remain a sticking point for Microsoft customers, as shown in recent surveys, press articles etc. Microsoft plans to implement the new terms on August 1, but corporate customers are obviously still struggling to digest the terms and come up with the funds to migrate to the new program.

Browser Wars II: CompuServe Strikes Back
"Today CompuServe (an AOL subsidiary) launched CompuServe 7.0 with Netscape as the underlying browser. CompuServe started testing Komodo, a Gecko-based client, last year, and is now experimenting with Gecko-based AOL clients. CompuServe's 3 million-member user base is seen as a testbed before turning AOL's 34 million members into Netscape users later this year." http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/04/16/206257

Trouble Incident Escalation
I am NOT a Tech Support person... But, if you have an open support incident and it has been open for an unusually long period of time, one of my functions is to help escalate the issue inside Novell Tech Support. I will decide what the 'unusually long period of time' is... If you have a support contract, your issue should be resolved within days (resolved; depending on the level of the support contract, someone should contact you within minutes/hours to start working on it.) Without a support contract, you might face hours/days of waiting before tech support can address your call. So, if you feel you need assistance, send me an e-mail describing the incident, the incident number, and who to contact. If you don't have an open incident, don't get me involved until you do.

How to Get Tech Support

Want to see how some of our solutions work?
Check them out at the on-line demo city... http://democity.novell.com/staticindex.html

Due a Software Upgrade?
Here is how the process works.... You should receive an e-mail from Novell Sales Operations stating you are entitled, as an upgrade protection customer, the next upgrade for product XYZ... You should then go to the upgrade request site at www.novell.com/licensing/upgfulfill and fill in the appropriate lines and information. Your upgrade should then be shipped second day.... BUT turnaround time is dependent on when the product is actually available for FCS (First Customer Ship), which could be days or weeks after the actual product announcement. If you are then having problems, please let your IA/NE Novell team know so we can get involved.
