NetWare News
You've always known that NetWare outdistances the competition in all respects, including availability, security, performance and manageability. The world is saying NetWare 6 is simply the best NetWare ever. Now is the time to build your business case for Novell NetWare 6 and we want you to discover the top 4 components to get started:

  1. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) - Get the independent Gartner Study, the results are staggering
  2. Risk Assessments - Shocking information about Microsoft that they don't want you to know
  3. Competitive - Check out the comparisons between legacy and next-generation networks and how Novell and Microsoft approach the future
  4. Success Stories - See who is adopting NetWare 6 and why
Visit the NetWare 6 Business Case website to learn more http://www.novell.com/products/netware/business_case.html The NetWare 6 TCO tool is easy to use -- you simply answer a series of step-by-step questions to provide information about your customers' organization. It's proven and accurate -- the TCO tool uses the latest TCO methodologies and real data from leading NetWare 6 beta sites. The TCO tool can be downloaded from http://www.novell.com/products/netware/nw6_tco.html Note: The TCO tool is an .EXE file (31MB). During the installation process you will be prompted to enter two key codes. The first key code is CEJI-551 and the second key code is 123.

NIMS SPECmail Results
Here's a URL for the most recent SPEC Mail results for NIMS: http://www.spec.org/osg/mail2001/results/res2002q1/mail2001-20020312-00014.html Basically, the results mean that they could support 210,000 active users on one box. If you look at some of the results from the other vendors, make certain to look at the Configuration Diagram. We used only one server, some use up to 3 or 4 users. If we were to do that, we could easily attain the same numbers.

BrainShare Keynote slides, Flying Boy Video and more
It's been a busy week for Novell employees in Salt Lake City! You can find BrainShare materials at the main BrainShare page http://www.novellbrainshare.com/portal/controller/home and the Webcast Video Archive http://www.novellbrainshare.com/portal/content/home_video.jsp. Some of the favorites include:

Also, while Jack Messman couldn't attend, his welcome presentation is available for all employees, partners and customers and covers our strategy, our One Net Solutions Model and much more! http://www.novellbrainshare.com/published/keynotes/BrainShare2002_JackMessman.pdf

eDirectory 8.7 Last week a press release went out announcing plans for eDirectory 8.7. The key points included: upcoming availability of the Novell eDirectory 8.7 public beta , Novell eDirectory 8.7 introduces Web-based and wireless directory administration, expanded developer tools, eDirectory 8.7 lays the foundation for driving the industry adoption of UDDI and eDirectory provides a platform for directory-enabled solutions in areas such as provisioning, user access control, desktop management and many others. Read the press release http://www.novell.com/news/press/archive/2002/03/pr02024.html or check out the pre-release product flyer http://www.novell.com/products/edirectory/edirectory_flyer_87.html

More eDirectory
Novell eDirectory sales up 32%! The numbers are in and they are going up, up and up! Novell eDirectory sales are up 32% in one quarter from Q4 01 to Q1 02.

eDirectory 8.6.1 and 8.6.2 - Important Information Based upon some comments and questions over the past couple of weeks, we feel that it is important to update you with some key 8.6.2 information.

  1. eDirectory 8.6.2 Full Version - A full version of eDirectory 8.6.2 is now available at the Novell download site for NetWare and Windows (http://download.novell.com), the Unix version will be available shortly. This version WILL replace 8.6.1. Customers that are using versions of NDS/eDirectory prior to 8.6.x, eDirectory 8.6 on NetWare 6, or eDirectory 8.6.1 on all platforms can use this version to upgrade to eDirectory 8.6.2.
  2. eDirectory 8.6.2 Patch for All OS Platforms - As many of you may know, a eDirectory 8.6.2 Patch for All OS Platforms (EDIR862.EXE) that moves customers from 8.6.1 to 8.6.2 has been posted at the support web site. This patch can be used to move current eDirectory 8.6.1 installations to eDirectory 8.6.2. This patch should NOT be used to update a customer from 8.6 (NetWare 6 only) to eDirectory 8.6.2. It is important to note that the patched files in the eDirectory 8.6.2 Patch for All OS Platforms are the same version as those files in the eDirectory 8.6.2 Full Version.
  3. eDirectory 8.6.2 on NetWare 6 NetWare 6 customers that have not installed NetWare SP1 (that means they should be using eDirectory 8.6) have two migrations paths to 8.6.2. The first is to installed the NetWare 6 SP1 patch which will update eDirectory 8.6 to eDirectory 8.6.2. The second is to have the customer install the eDirectory 8.6.2 Full Version. It is important to note that the eDirectory 8.6.2 version that ships with NetWare 6 SP1 is slightly different than both the eDirectory 8.6.2 Full Version and the eDirectory 8.6.2 Patch for All OS Platforms. The eDirectory 8.6.2 Full Version and eDirectory 8.6.2 Patch for All OS Platforms was updated to fix some scalability issues for Yahoo. These scalability issues will not affect the typical NetWare 6 SP1 customer, because of this updating these modules at this time is not required.
  4. Why should you be recommending that customers upgrade to eDirectory 8.6.2? - It is important for customer that are using 8.6 or 8.6.1 get upgraded to eDirectory 8.6.2. There are some key synchronization issues that have been resolved with 8.6.2.
  5. What version of NDS/eDirectory works with eDirectory 8.6.2? - eDirectory 8.6.2 is compatible with servers that are running NDS 6.x, NDS 7.x, NDS 8, or eDirectory 8.5.x.
  6. Where can you get precise and definitive information about eDirectory 8.6.x and 8.6.2? - For information about issues that are not documented in the README upon shipment you should refer to TID #10066455 at http://support.novell.com. This TID is the master 8.6.x TID and all information regarding version and platforms specific issues will be referred from this TID.

Compatible??
According to a recent article at CoolSolutions, the new full version of eDir 8.6.2 is compatible with all NDS versions 6.x and above. Does this mean even in same Replica Ring? We have seen serious problems if you introduce eDir 8.6 into a Replica Ring in which all servers do not have at least the following minimum DS versions(as required according to the eDir 8.6 readme addendum):

The article implies that problem has been solved with 8.6.2. Here's the article: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/nds/features/a_862_upgrade_edir.html

BorderManager
It's been an exciting year so far for BorderManager! First, a IDC report ranked BorderManager as one of the top 5 firewalls (http://mysales.novell.com/applets/stext/IDCfirewall.pdf), Novell & SurfControl announce a new agreement to include SurfControl in BorderManager and now 3.7 will be shipping soon! The product is sure to be a hit, as there are already nearly 1000 orders placed before the product has even shipped! One of hottest new features in BorderManager in 3.7 is browser-based firewall administration.

Want to know more about BorderManager 3.7 - If so, here's some resources:

Tomcat 3.3a and NW6

This area is available for you as a programmer, developer or batch file writer, to share your program. This is a way for both authors of programs and Novell users to benefit from your skills. The Cool Solutions editors will scan the files for viruses before posting them. They will also perform language editing, and make sure there is descriptive information with each file to explain the purpose and usage of each tool. You may submit your descriptive text in the body of an email message, or in an attached Word or WordPerfect file.

So what are you waiting for? Send us your tools. Just email them to the appropriate mailbox as follows: Portal Services downloadables: psmag@novell.com

Looking for RSS News Feeds?
Novell now has about 15 XML data streams that can be used to display current (Novell) headlines in any Portal implementation via the RSS_News gadget. The pages the are available in XML are marked with an XML icon (see http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/). Instructions (and a complete list of feeds) is available at: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/collector/feeds_xml.html

The New Free Tools Area On CoolSolutions Is Now Open To The Public
(http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/freetools.html)
Tool pages are now full-text searchable and - for more intuitive access - several new indexes list the tools by category, by the Novell product they support, by tool name, and by file name. The Free Tools area is both a repository of tools that don't have another home *and* a directory of tools that are hosted on other sites. If you know of a tool that should be added to the list, please let us know by sending an email to coolguys@novell.com - we'll do the rest. Plus... Last week we listed our first DirXML stylesheet in the Cool Solutions Free Tools area. Looks, to me, like a good way to distribute stylesheets that solve common customer problems (and get them hooked on our technology). http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tools/bycategory.html#stylesheets. If you have a stylesheet you would like to add, shoot it our way: coolguys@novell.com

Trouble Incident Escalation
I am NOT a Tech Support person... But, if you have an open support incident and it has been open for an unusually long period of time, one of my functions is to help escalate the issue inside Novell Tech Support. I will decide what the 'unusually long period of time' is... If you have a support contract, your issue should be resolved within days (resolved; depending on the level of the support contract, someone should contact you within minutes/hours to start working on it.) Without a support contract, you might face hours/days of waiting before tech support can address your call. So, if you feel you need assistance, send me an e-mail describing the incident, the incident number, and who to contact. If you don't have an open incident, don't get me involved until you do.

How to Get Tech Support

Want to see how some of our solutions work?
Check them out at the on-line demo city... http://democity.novell.com/staticindex.html

Due a Software Upgrade?
Here is how the process works.... You should receive an e-mail from Novell Sales Operations stating you are entitled, as an upgrade protection customer, the next upgrade for product XYZ... You should then go to the upgrade request site at www.novell.com/licensing/upgfulfill and fill in the appropriate lines and information. Your upgrade should then be shipped second day.... BUT turnaround time is dependent on when the product is actually available for FCS (First Customer Ship), which could be days or weeks after the actual product announcement. If you are then having problems, please let your IA/NE Novell team know so we can get involved.
