The CIO Corner

If Microsoft security fails, .Net fails
By John Pescatore, ZDNet News
1/23/01

"Gartner believes that Microsoft is serious about making this shift because its .Net strategy will fail if the security initiative fails. Nevertheless, changing the management and development culture of such a large company poses a huge challenge, and it won't happen quickly."

"Corporations should make it clear to Microsoft that they will base their use of Net services and future Microsoft software products on clear evidence that they have become more trustworthy." http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_clickthrough.jsp?contentId=5928&logType=3

CEOs Take Closer Look At Security
By Eric Chabrow, InformationWeek
1/23/02

"Nine of 10 CEOs at companies with yearly revenue of $1 billion or more have personally reviewed disaster-planning documents since Sept. 11, according to a survey by Booz Allen Hamilton. And, not unexpectedly, two-thirds see their companies spending more on security in the foreseeable future." http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_clickthrough.jsp?contentId=5926&logType=3

The Meter Is Running... But CIO's Are Saying "STOP THE CAB"
By Scott Berinato, CIO Magazine
1/15/02

"Microsoft came up with a new subscription licensing model, called Licensing 6.0 and Software Assurance, saying it made life simple for corporate IT. But CIOs are now saying the plan is a long ride with a fare that keeps climbing." http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_clickthrough.jsp?contentId=5854&logType=3

Novell To Link Metadirectory To Non-NetWare Networks
From Infoworld
By Deni Connor, Network World
January 4, 2002 4:01 pm PT

NOVELL IS EXPECTED to release as early as next week a version of its metadirectory software that works with more applications, including those on remote machines that aren't on NetWare networks.

Like other metadirectories, Novell's new DirXML 1.1 will join data from myriad directories typically found on corporate networks. The company hopes the upgrade will further differentiate its offering from those offered by Critical Path, iPlanet and Microsoft, among others.

While DirXML supported remote applications before Version 1.1, it no longer requires customers to run Novell's eDirectory platform at each site. DirXML, which runs on any server that also has eDirectory installed, links to remote applications via IP using Secure Sockets Layer technology. The applications can reside on mainframes, Macintoshes or assorted Win32 and Java systems.

Brian Wiatr, senior systems administrator for the Hartford Public Schools in Connecticut, will use the remote connection support to manage end-user accounts on Windows 2000, and NetWare 5.1 and 6 servers.

"We're looking at doing single-point of administration for both eDirectory and Active Directory," Wiatr says. DirXML 1.1 will let him gather information from Windows 2000 and manage it with tools on his NetWare network. http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/02/01/04/020104hnnovell.xml

Control Runaway Costs Many business owners are uneasy with rising IT costs, but are afraid to meddle with existing infrastructure for fear of disturbing vital network services. The idea that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" often guides the decision to stay with the status quo, no matter what it costs. But the truth is, when it comes to IT, it doesn't have to be broken to need fixing. Here's how to get back in control. http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_clickthrough.jsp?contentId=5846&logType=3

MyParty Virus Features Dangerous Snapshot
By Brian Fonseca
January 28, 2002 09:03 AM

ANTI-VIRUS OFFICIALS ARE warning users to be on the lookout for the new "Myparty" virus that preys on the popularity of personalized photograph Web pages offered by companies such as Yahoo and AOL.

Featuring an e-mail subject heading of "new photos from my party!" the virus attempts to trick users into thinking a link inside the e-mail points the reader to a friend's photo Web site, according to anti-virus officials at McAfee and Symantec. However, the URL is actually an attachment containing a portable executable .com file that launches itself to every address in a user's Windows address book and addresses found within .DBX files, said Vincent Gullotto, senior director for McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team), in Santa Clara, Calif.

Gullotto said McAfee first began investigating submitted samples of Myparty on Sunday night. Despite a lack of heavy propagation, the anti-virus vendor chose to label the virus medium risk due to its serious social engineering nature.

The bogus e-mail features the following message:

" Hello!

My party...It was absolutely amazing!

I have attached my web page with new photos!

If you can please make color prints of my photos. Thanks!"

The worm attachment reads www.myparty.yahoo.com and is sized at 29,696 bytes. The virus copies itself to C:\Recycled\regctrl.exe and executes that file, retrieving a user's infected machine's default SMTP server from the registry to launch itself through solicited addresses.

Anti-virus vendors said the virus will stop mailing itself out at midnight on Tuesday. A variant of the worm also exists in a slightly different file -- myparty.photos.yahoo.com -- featuring an attachment size of 28,160 bytes.

Ya Gotta Love Dave Kearns..
Today's focus: Vendors attempt at migration again
By Dave Kearns

Evidently our little dig at BindView and ePresence last fall didn't sway the thinking at these supposedly "Novell friendly" firms. They've now joined forces with Microsoft to launch a free seminar tour called "NetWare and Windows 2000 - Real World Options for Novell Customers".

The blurb (http://epresence.com/asp/about/event.asp?master_code=MSBSMI) says:

"Do you rely on Novell NetWare, NetWare Directory Services and/or GroupWise? Are you are considering your organization's next strategic move? Are you unsure if it includes integrating with or migrating to Microsoft Windows 2000, Active Directory and Exchange 2000?"

Microsoft is sponsoring the tour, for goodness' sake - what do you think the answer will be?

Here's another hint, the agenda includes:

I'll just bet they aren't talking about migrating from Windows 2000 to NetWare!

When it was still called Banyan, ePresence was one of Novell's biggest competitors. Now it seems ePresence has thrown in with the only networking-software company that's attempting to challenge NetWare. That's understandable, if disingenuous. Perhaps it needs to publish a disclaimer along the lines of "We've been trying to get people to migrate away from NetWare for almost 20 years - we keep failing, but we keep trying!"

Microsoft, of course, is out to crush NetWare entirely.

That leaves BindView. In the same newsletter last fall (see http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/NetWare/2001/01052557.html), I suggested you e-mail BindView and its head, Eric Pulaski (epulaski@bindview.com might work) and tell them why you are not about to purchase new BindView products, but also why you're replacing the ones you currently have. Corporations only understand you when you speak dollars and cents, evidently.

Now, I'm not suggesting that BindView or ePresence shouldn't be involved in the migration business - they should be, as long as someone is interested in buying their products and services. What I object to is the use of a so-called "objective presentation" as a thinly veiled advertising medium. You should object, also.

By the way, at the very bottom of the page describing the seminar (http://epresence.com/asp/about/event.asp?master_code=MSBSMI) there's an e-mail address to learn more about ePresence. When I tried the link (mailto:info@epresence.com), I got the following response from the ePresence mail server:

"Your message did not reach the following recipient(s):(info@epresence.com) The e-mail address could not be found. Perhaps the recipient moved to a different e-mail organization, or there was a mistake in the address. Check the address and try again."

If ePresence can't even configure its own mail server, should you really trust the company to advise you on the choice between GroupWise and Exchange?

From One of Our Customers...
"I wanted to let you and Novell know of our appreciation of ZenWorks capabilities. We recently had a student steal 4 laptops out of one of our integrated classrooms. The laptops were set so that you could not exit out of the Novell login. The student in trying to get around it had to login which registered the workstation in NDS with his username, time of login, and IP connection. This led us to his room where 3 of the laptops were recovered. He took the fourth to a friend who said he could get around the bios lock (we disabled booting from the floppy). The police went to the friend's house and retrieved the last laptop. In total the two had over $10,000 of stolen xxxxxxx property. If it hadn't been for workstation registration we would never have caught them.

I just wanted to let you and Novell know of our appreciation for the extra benefits of ZenWorks."

How to Run a Microsoft-Free Shop
DO YOU FIND that you're incapable of stopping upgrades? Do you spend much of your day patching security holes? Do you have a vague sense that you're spending too much money on software? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you may have become overly dependent on Microsoft. Here's a handy 12-step program to cure your condition.

Technical Tips

Need Information
We are working to get Peoplesoft to provide integration between their products and GroupWise. The integration would be between their workflow functionality and GW. They have asked for names of customers who are using both products (i.e. what is the market demand). If you are interested, send me your contact information.

We will be starting a similar process with SAP soon so feel free to let us know about this, but please indicated SAP versus Peoplesoft.

NAM (Novell Account Management) And Network Time Sync
Don't forget that, out of the box, there is no time synchronization between NT servers and NetWare servers. In order to ensure time synchronization between NT and NetWare boxes, you will need to install a NTP service on the NT boxes and point this service to the NetWare server as a time source.

There are a number of shareware/freeware NTP utilities available for NT/2000. One that I am using and which is working fine is the NTP utility from Tardis :
http://www.kaska.demon.co.uk/
This is by no means the only NTP utility or the "Novell recommended" NTP utility for Windows NT/2000 !!!

NetWare Bandwidth Management
http://www.trafficshaper.com/
Abstract:
Now you can manage the bandwidth for any protocol or interface on your Novell NetWare 4.xx and 5.x server. The Traffic Shaping Engine NLM acts as a powerful bandwidth manager, transparently regulating network traffic on your NetWare server. You can identify, group, and apply a data rate to any desired traffic. This traffic shaper offers flexible data rates and accommodates burst traffic, while smoothing out the peaks. Connection oriented data rates implement bandwidth policies and quotas for workstations, applications, hosts, TCP connections.

The Beta 2 version of the Traffic Shaping Engine can be used to manage both Internet and LAN bandwidth, IPX and IP traffic, and apply data rates to up to 1,000,000 simultaneous connections. The Traffic Shaping Engine requires very little memory and imposes negligible overhead. This traffic shaper can be used on older servers and even the slowest Pentium is capable of managing >> T1 speed connections. A simple, efficient bandwidth management solution for Novell shops.

If you use Border Manager, Novell's web servers, Novell Internet Messaging System, Netscape Enterprise Server, NIAS, or GroupWise WebAccess, why not add bandwidth management capabilities as well? Its easy, its free, and it works!

Optimize Data Storage & Availability
Do you need to get a handle on skyrocketing storage management costs? Are you under pressure to increase availability and accessibility to data and improve user satisfaction and productivity? It's as easy as 1, 2, 3. http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_clickthrough.jsp?contentId=5683&logType=3

News about BorderManager...
In its December 2001 bulletin, "Who's the Lord of the Rings? Worldwide Firewall/VPN Software Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005," IDC ranked Novell among the top five companies competing in the firewall/VPN market. Novell captured 4.1% of the market share with Novell BorderManager, earning $30 million in revenue in the 2000 firewall/VPN market space-an increase of 4% over 1999.

Novell BorderManager is one of Novell's premier access and security solutions. With its powerful directory-integrated features, it enables companies to control, accelerate and monitor their users' Internet activities. Because Novell BorderManager leverages identity-based access control and forward proxies, companies can safeguard their network against undesirable Internet content while maintaining exceptional performance levels. Novell BorderManager also integrates VPN services, an industry-certified firewall and a scalable content-filtering service to ensure that companies' networks are protected and their users are productive.

IDC foresees continued growth in the worldwide Firewall/VPN market. In fact, IDC predicts that the firewall/VPN market will grow to $1.7 billion by 2005. In its study, IDC considered the twenty leading providers of Firewall/VPN services. Novell was ranked ahead of such formidable competitors as IBM, Network Associates, Sun Microsystems Inc., and others. Novell is committed to increasing its market share in the firewall/VPN market and will continue to invest in Novell BorderManager. Novell will be releasing a new version of Novell BorderManager in the second quarter of 2002.

TIP: How To See TCP/IP Stats On The Console
Just type
     _TCP or/and
     _IP
on the server console and select the stats you want to see. Among other things information about used and free small ECB as well as used and free PCB are available. The default value of preallocated PCB is 1024 which could be a cause for a "not responding machine" in a highly accessed SMP environment. you can change this with ( monitor !h) server param---->communication. Further you can see stats related to LB/FT(loadbalancing and fault tolerance). When TCPSTAS.NLM loaded under protocol information in NROM will also show the same stats in workstation. You might need the latest SP in server. I know it works on NW6...

Tomcat for NetWare?
Go to:
http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat/release/v3.3/bin/, download the jakarta-tomcat-3.3a.zip file. Tomcat is not specific to a platform - it's all java. There are specific connectors for Apache and Tomcat though.

If this is going on a NW 5.1 server you will want to go to the following URL: http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat/release/v3.2.4/bin/

Download jakarta-tomcat - 3.2.4.zip.. You will then want to click on the NetWare folder at URL: http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat/release/v3.2.4/bin/NetWare/i386/ and download the mod_jk.nlm if you want to run through port 80 to Apache on NetWare. If you want to by-pass Apache simply use port 8080.

We have not tested Tomcat with JVM 1.17b which is still the default in NetWare 5.1. If you decide to upgrade the JVM Proceed Cautiously!!!! There are a number of utilities that rely on JVM 1.17b in NetWare 5.1 such as Oracle, ZENWORKS, etc. If you upgrade the JVM from 1.17b to 1.22 or 1.3 they will break! If they are not present then you are good to go.

Security Flaws Dim Trust in Microsoft

MS' Highest Priority Must be Security
By Thomas C Greene, The Register
January 17 2002

"Microsoft founder Bill Gates has finally noodled out the fact that his precious .NET initiative is never going to fly if the company continues turning out insecure products. Therefore, in a long-winded bull to all Microserfs issued Wednesday, Bill finally admits that the company has wrongly emphasized whistles and bells over security, and decrees that this shall change." http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_clickthrough.jsp?contentId=5810&logType=3

Microsoft Gearing Up for Anti-Linux Campaign
From ShadowRAM-
Microsoft's leaked Linux memo (CRN Online, Jan. 11), which highlights the company's battle plans against the open-source OS in 2002, is just a taste of what's to come next week at LinuxWorld. One source in the know said the propaganda machine in Redmond is gearing up for a major counteroffensive at the show, slated to begin Jan. 29 in New York. "You'll see a lot of anti-Linux activities from Microsoft," the source said.

Doug Miller, director of competitive strategy at Microsoft, will be on hand, a company spokesman said, declining to comment on the company's reported plans or the memo. "Microsoft considers Linux a valid competitor in the marketplace. [Linux] made us sit up and take notice in some areas where we needed to make changes [such as community]," the spokesman said. We'll see.

Trouble Incident Escalation
I am NOT a Tech Support person... But, if you have an open support incident and it has been open for an unusually long period of time, one of my functions is to help escalate the issue inside Novell Tech Support. I will decide what the 'unusually long period of time' is... If you have a support contract, your issue should be resolved within days (resolved; depending on the level of the support contract, someone should contact you within minutes/hours to start working on it.) Without a support contract, you might face hours/days of waiting before tech support can address your call. So, if you feel you need assistance, send me an e-mail describing the incident, the incident number, and who to contact. If you don't have an open incident, don't get me involved until you do.

You should then go to the upgrade request site at www.novell.com/licensing/upgfulfill and fill in the appropriate lines and information. Your upgrade should then be shipped second day.... BUT turnaround time is dependent on when the product is actually available for FCS (First Customer Ship), which could be days or weeks after the actual product announcement. If you are then having problems, please let your IA/NE Novell team know so we can get involved.
