'What Microsoft Doesn't Want You To Know' White Paper
Many organizations are faced with upgrading their current, outdated networks with newer technology. Some of these organizations are considering ripping and replacing their current network operating environments with an all Microsoft environment. If you are considering such a move, read this paper before going ahead. Investing a few minutes now could save you considerable time and money in the future. http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_item.jsp?itemId=7020

Technical Tips

Reinstalling Client32 Version 4.81 and 4.83
Be aware that removing and reinstalling the 4.81 sp3 or 4.83 client may cause a problem in which the keyboard and mouse will not function within windows. To resolve this problem you must do the following:

  1. boot into dos
  2. copy kblock.sys and mouslock.sys from a system that's running properly to a floppy
  3. copy these files into c:\winnt\system32\drivers directory
  4. restart computer

Is There A Limit To The Directory Path Length In The iFolder That Ships With NW 6?
It's not really an iFolder problem only, it's a Windows OS problem. Here is the KB article from MS on how they only work with filenames/paths that are 259 characters or less.

Microsoft support document: http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q210631

Files, Folders, or Path Names with More Than 259 Characters Are Not Displayed (Q210631)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 , Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 , Datacenter Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 , Professional
Microsoft Windows 2000 , Server
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you create a new file or folder on a network share with a path containing more than 259 characters (including the drive letter and "\" characters) using Windows Explorer, the computer containing the share may not be able to access the file or folder. However, computers that connect to the share across the network can view the file or folder with a path containing more than 259 characters.

How Do I Know That My eDirectory Version Is 128 Bits Or 56 Bits?
It's all NICI based! Even though the 8.6.2 download denotes 56bits, it really depends on the NICI you have installed. If the NICI is 128bit, then eDirectory will be at 128bit.

New NetWare 6 Demonstration Files Available
These fully scripted AVI demos will help you present technology solutions to your customers without having to build a demonstration system. Includes demos for file access, printing, remote access and configuration, migrating from Windows 2000 server with AD to NetWare 6 and more. http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_clickthrough.jsp?contentId=7752&logType=3

Ever Wonder Which Products Include eDirectory?
Ever get the question what products include eDirectory with them? Never fear, your answer is here! The Products that have bundled eDirectory are: GroupWise 6, NIMS 3, iFolder, OnDemand 1.5, DirXML 1.0 and 1.1, iChain 1.5 and 2.0, Account Management 2.1, NetWare 5.x and 6, Zen for Desktops 3.2, Single SignOn 2.1, NDS Corporate Edition.

Ever Have To Recreate The GroupWise Sent Items Folder?
http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/gwmag/features/tips/t_sent_email_folder_recreation_gw.html Are you getting asked this same question over and over? Patrick Farrell was, so he created an animation that goes through the process of recreating the sent items folder. Now he just points users to the web page with the animation and instructions and they figure it out from there. Check it out!

Hailstorm Canceled
Today's focus: Microsoft's Hailstorm trickles down
By Dave Kearns

A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that Microsoft was quietly abandoning its consumer information service called ".Net MyServices" (but still best known by its original code name of "Hailstorm"). This was to be a central repository for a person's digital persona, easing access to online purchasing and personalization.

Hailstorm looked like a directory, acted like a directory and sounded like a directory - but wasn't based on either Microsoft's Active Directory or its acquired Zoomit directory technology. In fact (see: "A Hailstorm is coming" http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/nt/2001/00592581.html) Microsoft never used the word "directory" when talking about the technology (see: "Ignorance, not Malice" http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/nt/2001/00619300.html - about why it never used the "d" word).

Hailstorm/MyServices, though, was doomed from the start - and Microsoft's plans for it put the nail in the coffin. No one believed that Microsoft could keep users' data secure. No one believed that Microsoft wouldn't misuse that data. And Microsoft compounded its problems by insisting on a subscription model of payment for users and vendors making use of MyServices.

Microsoft claims it will reposition the products and sell them as a shrink-wrapped offering to companies wishing to use the technology to track their own extranet users - which users are probably doing with a directory right now.

Sun and 100 software midgets launched what was called - with bombastic pride - the "Liberty Alliance" (http://www.projectliberty.org), which would supposedly do everything that MyServices would with one big exception: it wouldn't be owned by Microsoft.

Since Liberty Alliance has issued four press releases, each touting a new member of the group. As far as I can tell, the membership has never met face-to-face, has never proposed or discussed any technology and exists essentially as names on letterhead. Expect this turkey to go belly up sometime soon.

MyServices was a very good idea but one that was not implemented very well and (surprisingly for Microsoft) was not marketed at all. The product - even most of the technology - is something we can do without. However the idea - the ability for individuals to safely gather together their identity information and share it with a great deal of granularity on a case-by-case basis, from any platform connected to the Internet - is something we should try hard to preserve.

This isn't something that should be controlled by any commercial vendor. It needs well-defined standards and control by a disinterested organization in order to be accepted by users and by vendors.

MS LICENSING COULD PUSH USERS TO STAROFFICE | News: Computerworld
The controversy surrounding Microsoft's enterprise licensing plan may cost the company some business, and hand it over to Sun. Gartner analysts predict StarOffice has at least a 50-50 chance of taking a 10% chunk of the office productivity suite market by the end of 2004. http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/newsItem/0,289139,sid1_gci821147,00.html

Novell NetMail Announcement
On Monday, May 13, 2002, Novell will announce that the Novell Internet Messaging Server (NIMS) is being renamed to Novell NetMail. We will also announce that Novell NetMail 3.1, the next version of the product, will ship in June. NetMail 3.1 includes several new features, including Windows NT/2000 Support and PDA Sync for PocketPC and Palm. To date, NetMail has been most successful in the higher education market, with recent wins at the University of Kentucky and Georgia State. Recently, several corporations have purchased NetMail to serve their deskless workers. Southwest Airlines has deployed NetMail to provide email to their 11,000 pilots, flight attendants, and ground crew. This allows these deskless workers to communicate with Southwest's corporate-based employees who continue to use GroupWise. Lufthansa recently purchased NetMail and plans to move 25,000 Microsoft Exchange users to this platform.

Administration Information:

Trouble Incident Escalation
I am NOT a Tech Support person... But, if you have an open support incident and it has been open for an unusually long period of time, one of my functions is to help escalate the issue inside Novell Tech Support. I will decide what the 'unusually long period of time' is... If you have a support contract, your issue should be resolved within days (resolved; depending on the level of the support contract, someone should contact you within minutes/hours to start working on it.) Without a support contract, you might face hours/days of waiting before tech support can address your call. So, if you feel you need assistance, send me an e-mail describing the incident, the incident number, and who to contact. If you don't have an open incident, don't get me involved until you do.

How to Get Tech Support

Want to see how some of our solutions work?
Check them out at the on-line demo city... http://democity.novell.com/staticindex.html

Due a Software Upgrade?
Here is how the process works.... You should receive an e-mail from Novell Sales Operations stating you are entitled, as an upgrade protection customer, the next upgrade for product XYZ... You should then go to the upgrade request site at www.novell.com/licensing/upgfulfill and fill in the appropriate lines and information. Your upgrade should then be shipped second day.... BUT turnaround time is dependent on when the product is actually available for FCS (First Customer Ship), which could be days or weeks after the actual product announcement. If you are then having problems, please let your IA/NE Novell team know so we can get involved.
