The CIO Corner
Consultants. Whose Side Are They On?? PART 2
How many of you work in companies/organizations where you have to submit
a purchase request to get some new pencils? A new bag of paperclips?
Detailed accounting is done for office supplies.. Yet some consultant
comes in and recommends you rip out your existing network infrastructure
and replace with a new one. If that same company were going to make
a capital investment, there would be so many cost-benefit studies done
it would consume several trees. Yet here you are being told to rip
and replace, usually with no promise of any better Return On Investment
(ROI)(does anyone really use or look at ROI any more??) or lowering
your Cost Of Ownership. Past studies have shown that a migration from
NetWare to NT/Windows 2000 can RAISE your network costs 3 to 9 times!!
Where is the cost benefit of doing that. We have on occasion heard-
We know we'll need more servers, we'll need more people to run the network,
we will be less secure, we will have more viruses, our network will be
less stable, but we are going to migrate anyway. It's a "Business Decision".
What business are you in??? Managers in departments other than IS making
decisions like this would be looking for a new job.....

"Why They Lie" Campaign Launches, Dispels Lies from You-Know-Who
Here we go again. Another release of NetWare, another round of misinformation
from you-know-who. Why does Microsoft* do it? Well, with the press calling
NetWare® 6 "the de-facto, industry-leading network operating system
for any corporate environment," ? -it's no wonder they're acting defensive.
Chances are, you've been burned by these guys before. We're here for
you. Come visit us and air your grievances in our Rant & Rave Forum.
You can also learn all about NetWare 6, compare our new licensing practices
to Microsoft's and discover why our technology is giving them fits.
After all, sneaky little tricks are no substitute for the truth.

Interesting Factoids-
"We often see migrations justified by a promised reduction in TCO, servers
or staffing. We advise SMBs to examine such promises carefully. In most
cases, we see no evidence of a reduction in support staff or servers
deployed as a result of migration from NetWare to Windows 2000. In fact,
we've seen cases where the opposite has proven true - i.e., the migration
resulted in a net increase in servers, staff or both. Through 2003,
90 percent of the migrations from NetWare 4 or 5 to Windows 2000 that
are based on a reduction in staff, servers or TCO will fail to deliver
a positive ROI (0.8 probability)". (Gartner Research - Neil MacDonald;
4/10/01)
"Strategic Planning Assumptions: Investments in Novell's products and
services are viable through at least year-end 2005 (0.8 probability).
... NetWare enterprises using GroupWise for messaging and/or Zenworks
for desktop management, will likely find it nearly impossible to justify
a move to AD." (Gartner Research - Michael Silver; 10/01)

iFolder Beta Opportunity
We will be coming out with our next version of iFolder, code named Snowbird,
in Q1 2002. We are looking for beta customers so let me know if you
would be interested in being part of the beta program. We will start
the beta in January and plan on releasing in February/March timeframe.
This version is targeted to Service Providers and will likely add the
following features.
- Linux and Solaris Server Support
- Large Scale Deployment, this means that multiple iFolder servers
can service the same DNS name
- Ability to choose your local iFolder directory for the iFolder client
- Pocket PC PDA support for web access to iFolder
- Administrator can recover pass phrase
- Reporting features for billing and management
This version will be for charge. We will offer upgrade pricing for
customers that currently own the iFolder 1.0 version. The 1.0 version
of iFolder is being repositioned as Personal Edition and this version
will continue to be included in NetWare 6.x. We will also continue
to improve the Personal Edition, such as adding the ability to choose
your local iFolder and the ability for the administrator to recover
the pass phrase. The Snowbird version and future versions will be an
Enterprise Edition (the official name isn't finalized) that can be purchased
at an additional cost.
After the Snowbird release, we will have the El Dorado release. This
version will likely add the following features
- Sharing of files and folders
- Ability to have multiple local iFolders
- Download exclusion filter for files and folders, this means that you
can decide to not have a specific folder synced to one of your machines
- Mac client
- Ability to have read-only accounts so that you can share files with
a group of users and they won't be able to modify the files
- And other new features TBD
Please let me know if you want to be in the program (send all names,
addresses, e-mails, phone numbers, etc)
Seasonal RFC (Request For Comment)
RFC 968 (Yes, it's a real RFC!!)
Twas the night before start-up and all through the net,
not a packet was moving; no bit nor octet.
The engineers rattled their cards in despair,
hoping a bad chip would blow with a flare.
The salesmen were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of data nets danced in their heads.
And I with my datascope tracings and dumps
prepared for some pretty bad bruises and lumps.
When out in the hall there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter.
There stood at the threshold with PC in tow,
An ARPANET hacker, all ready to go.
I could see from the creases that covered his brow,
he'd conquer the crisis confronting him now.
More rapid than eagles, he checked each alarm
and scrutinized each for its potential harm.
On LAPB, on OSI, X.25!
TCP, SNA, V.35!
His eyes were afire with the strength of his gaze;
no bug could hide long; not for hours or days.
A wink of his eye and a twitch of his head,
soon gave me to know I had little to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
fixing a net that had gone plumb berserk;
And laying a finger on one suspect line,
he entered a patch and the net came up fine!
The packets flowed neatly and protocols matched;
the hosts interfaced and shift-registers latched.
He tested the system from Gateway to PAD;
not one bit was dropped; no checksum was bad.
At last he was finished and wearily sighed
and turned to explain why the system had died.
I twisted my fingers and counted to ten;
an off-by-one index had done it again...

Novell Business Process Management Solution for Government White Paper
Most government institutions are under intense pressure from citizens
and local businesses to provide more services faster, while at the same
time decreasing taxes. Many of these institutions suffer from inefficient
processes and bureaucracies. Like their counterparts in the corporate
world who are making the transition to eBusiness, governments around
the world are struggling to streamline operations, expand and improve
services, and cut costs. http://www1.novell.com/resourcecenter/ext_item.jsp?itemId=2847

LINDOWS - Finally a True Alternative to M$?? Too Good to Be True??
This is amazing, if you haven't heard about them, check it out at www.lindows.com.
Apparently Microsoft is suing them, and bringing a little known effort
into the spotlight (thank you Microsoft marketing!). They expect it
to be released sometime in December. And you can get on the beta program
as well.... http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/011220/n20117913_2.html
Don't get too excited just yet. WINE has been around for years and
hasn't come anywhere close to what these guys are claiming to having
done with in less then six months. There's just way too many holes

Administration Information:
Trouble Incident Escalation
I am NOT a Tech Support person... But, if you have an open support incident
and it has been open for an unusually long period of time, one of my
functions is to help escalate the issue inside Novell Tech Support. I
will decide what the 'unusually long period of time' is... If you have
a support contract, your issue should be resolved within days (resolved;
depending on the level of the support contract, someone should contact
you within minutes/hours to start working on it.) Without a support contract,
you might face hours/days of waiting before tech support can address
your call. So, if you feel you need assistance, send me an e-mail describing
the incident, the incident number, and who to contact. If you don't have
an open incident, don't get me involved until you do.
How to Get Tech Support
Want to see how some of our solutions work?
Check them out at the on-line demo city... http://democity.novell.com/staticindex.html
Due a Software Upgrade?
Here is how the process works.... You should receive an e-mail from Novell
Sales Operations stating you are entitled, as an upgrade protection customer,
the next upgrade for product XYZ... You should then go to the upgrade request
site at www.novell.com/licensing/upgfulfill
and fill in the appropriate lines and information. Your upgrade should then
be shipped second day.... BUT turnaround time is dependent on when the product
is actually available for FCS (First Customer Ship), which could be days or
weeks after the actual product announcement. If you are then having problems,
please let your IA/NE Novell team know so we can get involved.
