Padlock Announcement
On August 14, 2001, Novell announced the discovery of a security issue
in GroupWise 5.5 Enhancement Pack and GroupWise 6 to its customers. At
that time, the Padlock Fix was provided to customers to address this
issue. It has been the intention of the Novell Collaboration Services
group to release more detailed information about the nature of the security
issue once customers had sufficient time apply the Padlock Fix.
Our current support data shows that over 85% of our directly trackable
customers have applied the fix to date. Based on this, Novell released
more detailed information about the nature of the Padlock security issue
on November 23, 2001. To this date Novell is not aware of any customer
system compromises due to this issue. Information is at:
http://support.novell.com/padlock/details.htm.
If your organization operates GroupWise 5.5 Enhancement Pack or GroupWise
6 and has not applied the Padlock Fix, we highly recommend you do so
as soon as possible. The Padlock Fix is available at
http://support.novell.com/padlock
Virus Alerts
From today-
"Goner" Virus Circulating; DO NOT OPEN
A new virus called "goner" is being rapidly distributed through e-mail.
The message will appear in your in box with the Subject: "hi". The
text reads:
"How are you ?
When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you
I am in a harry, I promise you will love it!"
If you receive this message, DO NOT OPEN IT! Update immediately your
virus definition files!!!!
And from last week-
Dangerous New Virus
W32.Badtrans.B@mm is a MAPI worm that emails itself out using different
file names. This mass mailing worm attempts to send itself using Microsoft
Outlook by replying to unread email messages. It also drops remote access
and key-logging trojans.
When run, the worm displays a message box entitled, "Install error"
which reads, "File data corrupt: probably due to a bad data transmission
or bad disk access." A copy is saved into the WINDOWS directory and to
the WINDOWS SYSTEM directory, and a registry entry is created to reload
the trojan upon system startup.
Once running, the trojan attempts to mail the victim's IP Address to
the author. Once this information is obtained, the author can connect
to the infected system via the Internet and steal personal information
such as usernames and passwords. In addition, the trojan also contains
a keylogger program which is capable of capturing other vital information
such as credit card and bank account numbers and passwords. The next
time Windows is loaded, the worm attempts to email itself by replying
to unread messages in Microsoft Outlook folders.
What You Need To Do
Do not open any email that has an attachment in which the second extension
is .pif or .scr. Any email that has such an attachment should be deleted.
Update immediately your virus protection definitions (a.k.a. pattern
files) to prevent infection.

Novell has unveiled a new set of rules of engagement for its channel,
based on a named accounts and named partners model.
The rules of engagement, promised by CEO Jack Messman last summer and
highlighted as part of Novell's Clear Channel strategy, hinges on named
accounts Novell will publish and named partners it will go to market
with, said Ladd Timpson, worldwide director of channel marketing for
Novell.

New NAT.NLM for NetWare 4.11/4.2/5.0/5.1
A new and updated beta version of NAT.NLM is available for download at
support.novell.com.
The name of the downloadable file is NAT600d.exe, which contains the
new NAT.NLM and NAT600D.TXT. The updated NAT.NLM includes some new commands
that are particularly useful for trouble-shooting purposes. The command
Set NAT Periodic Cleanup Time enables you to change the periodic
cleanup time for NAT from the default three (3) minutes. Adjusting this
parameter to one (1) minute can be useful to make slots in the TCP connection
table available on a heavily used NAT server. The command _dumpnattcp
writes the contents of the TCP connection table to a log file. You can
then use the information in the log file to troubleshoot NAT-related
problems. For details on how to use the information in the log file,
check TID 2960638.

The Other Guys Corner
60 Days for Companies and Consumers to e-Mail comments to Gov on MS
Antitrust
WASHINGTON (AP) - The government considered but rejected penalties against
Microsoft Corp. in its antitrust case that would have required the company
to reveal the secret blueprints to its flagship Windows software and
to distribute products from its fiercest rivals, court records show.
The Justice Department also considered forcing Microsoft to sell a stripped-down
version of Windows that did not include built-in software for browsing
the Internet, reading e-mail, listening to music or sending instant-messages.
Government lawyers "carefully weighed" those proposals but ultimately
chose other sanctions against Microsoft that they believed would result
in the "most effective and certain relief in the most timely manner."
In a 68-page court filing Thursday, the Justice Department formally
defended its choices in the landmark settlement it negotiated between
Microsoft and nine states. The government assured the judge the settlement,
if approved by the court, would "eliminate Microsoft's illegal practices,
prevent recurrence of the same or similar practices and restore the
competitive threat" the company faces from rivals.
The Justice Department also set up an e-mail address where consumers
and companies may send their comments about the antitrust settlement.
The address is microsoft.atr@usdoj.gov
and will operate for 60 days.
Critics, including Microsoft competitors and some independent antitrust
experts, have said the settlement announced Nov. 2 is inadequate and
charged that the company will be able to bypass many of the sanctions
because of vague language.
Microsoft Patents Zeros and Ones
http://www.theonion.com/archive/crowning_moments.html
REDMOND, WA-In what CEO Bill Gates called "an unfortunate but necessary
step to protect our intellectual property from theft and exploitation
by competitors," the Microsoft Corporation patented the numbers one
and zero Monday.
Above: At a press conference beamed live to Microsoft shareholders around
the globe, Bill Gates announces the company's patenting of the binary
system.
With the patent, Microsoft's rivals are prohibited from manufacturing
or selling products containing zeroes and ones-the mathematical building
blocks of all computer languages and programs-unless a royalty fee of
10 cents per digit used is paid to the software giant.
"Microsoft has been using the binary system of ones and zeroes ever
since its inception in 1975," Gates told reporters. "For years, in the
interest of the overall health of the computer industry, we permitted
the free and unfettered use of our proprietary numeric systems. However,
changing marketplace conditions and the increasingly predatory practices
of certain competitors now leave us with no choice but to seek compensation
for the use of our numerals."
A number of major Silicon Valley players, including Apple Computer,
Netscape and Sun Microsystems, said they will challenge the Microsoft
patent as monopolistic and anti-competitive, claiming that the 10-cent-per-digit
licensing fee would bankrupt them instantly.
"While, technically, Java is a complex system of algorithms used to
create a platform-independent programming environment, it is, at its
core, just a string of trillions of ones and zeroes," said Sun Microsystems
CEO Scott McNealy, whose company created the Java programming environment
used in many Internet applications. "The licensing fees we'd have to
pay Microsoft every day would be approximately 327,000 times the total
net worth of this company."
"If this patent holds up in federal court, Apple will have no choice
but to convert to analog," said Apple interim CEO Steve Jobs, "and I
have serious doubts whether this company would be able to remain competitive
selling pedal-operated computers running software off vinyl LPs."
As a result of the Microsoft patent, many other companies have begun
radically revising their product lines: Database manufacturer Oracle
has embarked on a crash program to develop "an abacus for the next millennium."
Novell, whose communications and networking systems are also subject
to Microsoft licensing fees, is working with top animal trainers on
a chimpanzee-based message-transmission system. Hewlett-Packard is
developing a revolutionary new steam-powered printer.
Despite the swarm of protest, Gates is standing his ground, maintaining
that ones and zeroes are the undisputed property of Microsoft.
Above: Gates explains the new patent to Apple Computer's board of directors.
"We will vigorously enforce our patents of these numbers, as they are
legally ours," Gates said. "Among Microsoft's vast historical archives
are Sanskrit cuneiform tablets from 1800 B.C. clearly showing ones and
a symbol known as 'sunya,' or nothing. We also own: papyrus scrolls
written by Pythagoras himself in which he explains the idea of singular
notation, or 'one'; early tracts by Mohammed ibn Musa al Kwarizimi explaining
the concept of al-sifr, or 'the cipher'; original mathematical manuscripts
by Heisenberg, Einstein and Planck; and a signed first-edition copy
of Jean-Paul Sartre's Being And Nothingness. Should the need arise,
Microsoft will have no difficulty proving to the Justice Department
or anyone else that we own the rights to these numbers."
Added Gates: "My salary also has lots of zeroes. I'm the richest man
in the world."
According to experts, the full ramifications of Microsoft's patenting
of one and zero have yet to be realized.
"Because all integers and natural numbers derive from one and zero,
Microsoft may, by extension, lay claim to ownership of all mathematics
and logic systems, including Euclidean geometry, pulleys and levers,
gravity, and the basic Newtonian principles of motion, as well as the
concepts of existence and nonexistence," Yale University theoretical
mathematics professor J. Edmund Lattimore said. "In other words, pretty
much everything."
Lattimore said that the only mathematical constructs of which Microsoft
may not be able to claim ownership are infinity and transcendental numbers
like pi. Microsoft lawyers are expected to file liens on infinity and
pi this week.
Microsoft has not yet announced whether it will charge a user fee to
individuals who wish to engage in such mathematically rooted motions
as walking, stretching and smiling.
In an address beamed live to billions of people around the globe Monday,
Gates expressed confidence that his company's latest move will, ultimately,
benefit all humankind.
"Think of this as a partnership," Gates said. "Like the ones and zeroes
of the binary code itself, we must all work together to make the promise
of the computer revolution a reality. As the world's richest, most powerful
software company, Microsoft is number one. And you, the millions of
consumers who use our products, are the zeroes."
Windows XP (eXtra Proprietary)
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,48011,00.html
Microsoft has launched its latest version of Windows, Windows XP (eXtra
Proprietary). Tightening its stranglehold on all industries that use
computers, Microsoft's XP features are certain to further degrade customer
choice, cost/performance and, in some cases, even civil liberties.

Trouble Incident Escalation
I am NOT a Tech Support person... But, if you have an open support incident
and it has been open for an unusually long period of time, one of my
functions is to help escalate the issue inside Novell Tech Support. I
will decide what the 'unusually long period of time' is... If you have
a support contract, your issue should be resolved within days (resolved;
depending on the level of the support contract, someone should contact
you within minutes/hours to start working on it.) Without a support contract,
you might face hours/days of waiting before tech support can address
your call. So, if you feel you need assistance, send me an e-mail describing
the incident, the incident number, and who to contact. If you don't have
an open incident, don't get me involved until you do.
How to Get Tech Support
Want to see how some of our solutions work?
Check them out at the on-line demo city... http://democity.novell.com/staticindex.html
Due a Software Upgrade?
Here is how the process works.... You should receive an e-mail from Novell
Sales Operations stating you are entitled, as an upgrade protection customer,
the next upgrade for product XYZ... You should then go to the upgrade request
site at www.novell.com/licensing/upgfulfill
and fill in the appropriate lines and information. Your upgrade should then
be shipped second day.... BUT turnaround time is dependent on when the product
is actually available for FCS (First Customer Ship), which could be days or
weeks after the actual product announcement. If you are then having problems,
please let your IA/NE Novell team know so we can get involved.
