Speaking of Clustering. Why Would You Need It?
Here's What's Wrong At EBay - InternetWeek

EBay's persistent site failures stem from a lack of coordinated IT planning and a centralized database and storage structure that creates a single point of failure, insiders and experts say.

The series of mishaps that led to eBay's 11-hour site crash on Jan. 3 was reminiscent of 15 similar outages between August 1998 and November 1999, including one in June 1999 that made the popular auction site unreachable for 22 hours.

Five years after the site's launch, the company hasn't installed redundant storage hardware to take over if the main storage system fails, said one former eBay staff member who asked not to be identified. The IT department alerted management to the risk of storage failure a year ago and recommended an upgrade to redundant storage arrays, but the expense wasn't approved, the source said.

What's more, eBay's application architecture makes it difficult to move to a more resilient load-balanced server farm. EBay wouldn't elaborate on a public statement it made on its Web site.

Mass hack takes out govt sites
By: John Leyden
Source = http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/16245.html
Posted: 22/01/2001 at 11:03 GMT

A hacking spree last weekend saw military and government Web sites defaced on three continents in what its perpetrators claimed was the largest mass defacement in the history of mankind.

The graffiti artists, known as Pentaguard, took out government Web sites in the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States and defaced them with the same message. This consisted a profane rant full of hacker in-jokes, bragging and references to beers, sexual desire for female hackers and Ferraris.

Staff at Attrition.org, a Web site which tracks defacements, said it was highly unusual for hackers to deface a large number of sites in different nations in different time zones all at the same time. Attrition.org backed up the claims of hackers about the scale of the attack and said it was one of "the largest, most systematic defacements of worldwide government servers on the Web" it had ever seen.

Paul Rogers, a security consultant at MIS Corporate Defence, said that the attack was well planned. He said it was likely a number of people were involved and that the attacks were automated and carried out against sites whose security was found to be lax.

"All the UK sites were running NT and Microsoft IIS [web server] and were hosted by ISPs - which raises the question of who's responsible for the security of hosted sites," said Rogers, who said that all the other sites were running similar configurations using IIS4.

"It's not difficult to retrieve list of government servers and look for weaknesses with them using automated scanners," he added.

US sites targeted included the Republican Caucus for the California Legislature, whose Web site has recently been shutdown because of the Californian power crisis. The Alaskan Office for the Department of Interior Web site was also hit, which points towards an overt political motive for the defacements. This is because Bush nominee Gale Norton, who favours oil prospecting in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, is set to be confirmed as the US Secretary of the Interior.

The British defacements consisted of a series of small municipalities as well as city and county governments - including a Web site set up by the UK Government to spread information on mad cow disease.

Australian targets were mostly local authorities with the exception of one attack, which took down a legislative search application for the entire Commonwealth of Australia.

Pentaguard is well known in security circles and even prior to this attack was the largest defacer of government and military Web sites, previous targets included NASA and government Web sites in China, Kuwait, Georgia, and even Vietnam. ®

ZENworks for Servers Simplifies and Streamlines NetWare Management in eBusiness Environment

PROVO, Utah - Jan. 31, 2001 - Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, today announced new network management features in its ZENworks® for Servers 2 product that will simplify the maintenance and enhancement of NetWare® services, saving administration time and improving the end-user experience. Previously able to simply distribute NetWare support packs, ZENworks for Servers will now distribute and install support packs on servers efficiently and automatically. This capability - available only from Novell - will mean dramatic time and cost savings for most customers.

"We expect this to shorten our rollout of support packs by 96 percent," said Bruce McLeod, system architect for the California Highway Patrol. "We currently spend a minimum of an hour per server preparing for and installing a support pack on our 200 NetWare servers. We expect ZENworks for Servers to cut that down to a total of eight hours for the entire environment. This will free our network administrators to perform more important, less mundane tasks. And this time savings is on top of the value that ZENworks for Servers has already delivered."

The ZENworks for Servers support pack installation feature supports NetWare 4.11 and higher. When combined with ZENworks for Desktops 3, ZENworks for Servers gives customers a policy-based management solution for their entire network that can literally save millions of dollars. Administrators can automate software packages or desktop images, deploy them once on a single server, and let ZENworks for Servers' Tiered Electronic Distribution (TED) deliver the content to NetWare, NT and Windows* 2000 servers and desktops throughout the organization.

According to Gartner analyst Neil MacDonald, NetWare customers have a need for automated support pack distribution and installation. "Customers automating this process will save the time, money and labor previously dedicated to the time-consuming, but necessary, function of keeping their server operating system current. In addition, customers using automated support pack installation will find it easier to maintain support pack parity across all of the servers in their organization and current with the manufacturer's recommendations, both of which improve supportability," MacDonald said.

"The real value of this ZENworks for Servers capability can be measured in two ways," said Brad Anderson, ZENworks business unit manager for Novell. "First, it simplifies and accelerates the deployment of NetWare support packs saving organizations time and money. Second, it enables organizations to install the support packs much quicker, allowing them to take advantage of the support pack benefits sooner."

ZENworks for Servers supports Novell's one Net vision, allowing companies to distribute data or software to servers across the Net, whether inside or outside the company firewall. This capability allows businesses to address the market demand for sharing information dynamically with customers, partners and suppliers. ZENworks for Servers solves the problem of server management on large networks and across the Net by offering customers several key benefits such as centralized directory-enabled management, business-to-business data sharing, integration with ZENworks for Desktops, full management console and policy-enabled NetWare servers. ZENworks accounted for well over half of the more than $120 million of management software sold by Novell in its fiscal 2000. It was one of the fastest growing of Novell's new Net services products, up more than 50 percent year-over-year.

Pricing and Availability
The support-pack installation feature of ZENworks for Servers 2 will be available at no charge to ZENworks for Servers 2 customers. The beta version is currently available at http://support.novell.com/beta/public. The software will be released in mid-March and will be available for download at http://www.novell.com/download.

Licenses for ZENworks for Servers 2 are available through authorized Novell® resellers, Novell's Customer Response Center (888-321-4272) or http://shop.novell.com for $59 per user. A per server licensing option is also available at $3,000 per server. This server-based license option allows customers to license ZENworks for Servers per server, independent of the number of users who access its services, programs or applications. For Novell licensing program customers who require an end-to-end network management solution, a ZENworks for Desktops/ZENworks for Servers bundle is also available for $79 per user license.

Kaspersky Lab: Kaspersky Lab improves its anti-virus products for Novell NetWare;
Kaspersky Lab announces the world's first anti-virus software integrated into ConsoleOne
JAN 24, 2001, M2 Communications - Cambridge, UK -- Kaspersky Lab, an international data-security software-development company, has announced the release of Kaspersky Anti-Virus beta-version for Novell NetWare powered by a new Java-based management system. The program also contains a set of unique features that significantly extend a user's ability for the centralised management of a network's anti-virus defence, thus decreasing network administrator overheads and making the product the world's most technically improved anti-virus system.

The main feature of the latest version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Novell NetWare that distinguishes the product's leading position from amongst other anti-viruses available on the market, is the full integration into Novell's advanced management system - ConsoleOne. Based on Java technology, ConsoleOne enables network engineers to perform centralised deployment and control over the anti-virus defence of all NetWare servers installed on the network and from any computer (including remote), regardless of the operating system and processor type installed. The deep integration into Novell Directory Service (NDS), enables the new Kaspersky Anti-Virus management system to provide fast and effective real-time modification of all the product's settings including, scheduling the product's operating mode and remotely starting different modules of Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

Together with the management system that integrates into ConsoleOne, the new version of Kaspersky Anti-virus for Novell NetWare also retains network control using NWAdmin.

Among the program's other new features is support for the automatic downloading of anti-virus database updates via the Internet, which prior to this was performed manually or with a help of a third-party event scheduler.

Now the entire process is fully automated: in order to complete the updating procedure, a user simply presses a single button or programs the built-in scheduler as appropriate.

The updater is designed as an independent program module. This eliminates the necessity to reboot the server each time the anti-virus database is updated. Another of Updater's important features is the optimised structure of the update distribution across the network. Kaspersky Anti-Virus now downloads the updates from the Kaspersky Lab secured updates site just once, and then simply distributes the updates to other NetWare servers within the network using the internal connection. This feature reduces the external traffic and decreases Internet-connection expenses.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Novell NetWare now supports multithreaded virus scanning. This feature allows for an unlimited amount of files being scanned simultaneously in real-time, with the amount being limited only by the server's hardware configuration. The multithreaded virus scanning essentially increases the overall efficiency of the entire network by parallel processing the requests from many workstations at the same time.

"In 1999, Kaspersky Lab was the first to develop an anti-virus system fully integrated into NDS and NWAdmin. The recent introduction of Kaspersky Anti-Virus featuring the integration into ConsoleOne confirms our intended course of providing users with comprehensive, cost-effective and centrally managed anti-virus defence, and makes the product one of the world's most technically advanced anti-viruses for Novell NetWare," said Denis Zenkin, Head of Corporate Communications for Kaspersky Lab.

Kaspersky Lab encourages all concerned parties to join the Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Novell NetWare beta-testing team. If you are interested in becoming a beta-tester, please contact us at support@kaspersky.com.

Trouble Incident Escalation
If you have an open support incident and it has been open for an unusually long period of time, one of my functions is to help escalate the issue inside Novell Tech Support. I will decide what the 'unusually long period of time' is... If you have a support contract, your issue should be resolved within days (resolved; depending on the level of the support contract, someone should contact you within minutes/hours to start working on it.) Without a support contract, you might face hours/days of waiting before tech support can address your call. So, if you feel you need assistance, send me an e-mail describing the incident, the incident number, and who to contact. If you don't have an open incident, don't get me involved until you do.

How to Get Tech Support

Want to see how some of our solutions work?
Check them out at the on-line demo city... http://democity.novell.com/staticindex.html

Due a Software Upgrade?
Here is how the process works.... You should receive an e-mail from Novell Sales Operations stating you are entitled, as an upgrade protection customer, the next upgrade for product XYZ... You should then go to the upgrade request site at www.novell.com/licensing/upgfulfill and fill in the appropriate lines and information. Your upgrade should then be shipped second day.... BUT turnaround time is dependent on when the product is actually available for FCS (First Customer Ship), which could be days or weeks after the actual product announcement. If you are then having problems, please let your IA/NE Novell team know so we can get involved.
